Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Plans 2020
One thing we really like about Blue Cross Blue Shield is their dedication to giving customers value for their money. They have some very reasonably priced Medicare plans, and we want to discuss what they can offer you and why you should consider Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare plans for 2020.
Blue Cross Medicare Options
When you shop for Medicare plans with Blue Cross Blue Shield, you can choose from Medicare Advantage plans and Medicare Supplements. The Advantage plans will typically cost more but will also cover more. You generally have more coverage option with Medicare Supplements, as there are eight distinct plans at the moment, but Advantage plans tend to be split into just a few different coverage types.
A Medicare Advantage plan can cover the cost of prescription drugs for you, as well as routine checkups, emergency treatment, urgently needed medical care and just about all of Medicare parts A and B. It can be used to protect you from unexpected medical costs and to cover for many common medical expenses.
Supplement plans offer you coverage for all sorts of expenses related to Original Medicare. These will partner with the Original Medicare plan and provide complementary coverage. With a Medicare Supplement, you could be covered for some or all of the following:
Medicare Part A copayment
Part B copayment
Medicare Part A deductible
Part B deductible
Medicare Part A coinsurance for hospice care
Part B excess charges
Nursing care coinsurance
Three pints of blood every year
Foreign travel costs for emergency care
Some Supplement plans will cover many of these items for about 50%. Look carefully at the kind of coverage that is being offered and how exactly it will line up to your needs.
Enrollment in Blue Cross Medicare Plans
In order to sign up for a Medicare plan of any kind, you have to enroll at the right time. There are specific enrollment periods you need to know about where the rates are lowest or where you will simply be allowed to access the plans.
Medicare Supplements let you enroll before you turn 65, and you can sign up within three months of turning 65. You can also wait until three months after your 65 birthday to enroll. This period is known as the Open Enrollment window for Medicare Supplements, and it is not the only time that you can sign up for this kind of Medicare plan. However, it does give you the best rates- ones that are not based on preexisting medical conditions. It also guarantees you approval for the plan that you want.
Medicare Advantage enrollment can only happen after you are 65 and have a valid Original Medicare plan. You can then only sign up during the specified enrollment period. This runs from October 15th until December 7th, and you cannot usually get a Medicare Advantage plan outside of that enrollment window.
You should be careful about what kind of coverage you have currently, though. The Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare plans for 2020 will conflict with some kinds of healthcare insurance plans. They will not be compatible with any employer or union-based healthcare pans, and they won’t be compatible with one another either. You cannot be signed up for a Medicare Advantage plan and a Medicare Supplement plan at the same time, and that’s due to the way they overlap a bit.
Why Blue Cross Is a Good Option
You could buy your Advantage and Supplement plans from many different providers, so why should you consider Blue Cross as a top choice? We think you should look at some of the other providers, and we make it very easy for you to do so. Blue Cross does tend to offer some of the best rates, but finding the right insurer for your plan is not just about getting a low price. You also have to factor in the kind of perks that are being offered. Blue Cross offers some free member perks just for signing up for its plans, such as remote access to medical professionals and programs to help you live healthier. The exact perks can vary from one location to another, so check out what this being offered in your area before you make a decision.
These Medicare plans that we have looked at are not always going to be accepted at every medical facility that accepts Medicare. Supplement plans will be, but not Advantage plans. The Advantage plans will only be honored if you go to a medical facility that is part of Blue Cross’ network. Now, this is a very large insurance company, so they have connections and contracts with a lot of hospitals, clinics, doctor’s offices, pharmacies and rehab centers around the country. Their network is extensive, but you need to realize that it has limits. If you live outside of Blue Cross’ network and want a Medicare Advantage plan, then you probably want to pay a bit more than you would for the average plan and get a PPO Medicare Advantage plan. This covers you for all of your plan’s coverage items both on and off the network. It only offers partial coverage outside the network, but that’s certainly better than nothing.
